It takes a lot of pressure off them if the theory is it's totally genetic. And, you might consider the MANNER in which they are being told it's a choice. Someone who is coming down hard/mean spirited on them is naturally going to make people defensive.

FWIW, I have studied the subject while working on my medical science degree. From what I can tell, it's really not known if it's genetic or acquired (i.e. choice.) It looks to me that there MAY be a genetic component to it, but that doesn't totally explain it. There looks to also be environmental factors involved also, which may not be under anyone's control. At any rate, you can be positive there has never been a peer reviewed scientific study saying it IS genetic. If there was one, the New York Times would have had it on their front page every day for two years. Really though, rather than arguing about it, I would suggest taking more of a "live and let live" attitude. If someone isn't hurting you, why bother them?

Out of curiosity, I'll pose a question of my own. Say for sake of argument that it is genetic. If that does turn out to be so, there will eventually be a medical treatment to reverse it. Would all of you who say being gay is horrible then want the treatment, assuming it is safe and effective? Wouldn't you agree that federal money should be spent to research the treatment and pay the costs for anyone who wants it?

Because every day we have to hear the same things over and over... that its a sin, we're going to hell, that we can "turn" straight & repent so God will forgive us, that is wrong, etc. etc etc.

After awhile you get sick of hearing it and you just truly want people to understand that it is really not a choice. You want them to be able to say that they know its not a choice (even if they dont agree with it).

Being gay is not a choice, we are born this way. We are born with feelings for the same sex just as heterosexuals are born with feelings for the opposite sex. We dont wake up one day and say "Gee I think today is a day that I need to be straight" or "Lets see Saturday night I wanna go to that gay bar so Lesbian it is on Saturday". How can someone even think thats a good argument? What proof do you have that we can "turn" straight or turn gay from straight.?? We have scientific studies that show we were born like this.

I hope someone will understand after readin this.

For MOST homesexuals it is not a choice. Why would someone pick to be discriminated against?? I know that I get angry when people say it's a choice because this means they think it's just easy to "decide" to be straight....I do not like men sexually; never will; and for some heterosexual to tell me that I can just pick to like guys is very arrogant. I want people to know that I did not pick being gay...it picked me before I even knew what gay was. Also by assuming that it is a choice people also attach the idea that it is wrong...which it is not. WOW this is SOOOO frustrating.

First and foremost, I DO NOT think its a choice, for me I know its not a choice.

Second, when I asked if being str8 is a choice, I got some answers that were very defensive as well. You are attacking me, and my life, of course i am going to get defensive. The same way christians act when I say and believe there is no gawd.

Because of ignorant people.

I spent years in psychiatry, prayer and self-help, trying to be "normal." None of it helped and it only made my life worse, I had no self-esteem, I felt like a 2nd class citizen (because I was told I was by society) and that suicide was an option, because I was going to h*ll anyways. Well, you know what? After I realized that what others thought didn't matter, I started having a GREAT LIFE!

Today, I'm happy, healthy and gay and I wish I'd always loved myself the way I do now. So, can YOU choose to be GAY? NO? Then what makes you think WE can choose, either?

Because it isn't a choice and it's the homophobes who claim it's a choice or people who have claimed to spoken to all LBGt but obviously haven't and who also never listn to anyone who says that it isn't a choice. The straights never answer when they get asked if it was a choice. people also get sick of thier lives getting attacked by bigots and religious hypocrites

Because it is accussed of as being wrong and a sin.....People like to defend theirselves. Its not a defense mechanmism its more of an educational approach to inform the asker of the question.. If it was a choice more gay people would chose to be 'straight' so they could have the right to marriage and bennefits... Gay people find this answer to that as a no brainer question that gets asked reppetivley you really, truly cant blame anyone for defending their opinions and backing them up with scientific facts.

Only straights who have NO foundation to base an opinion think being gay is a choice. Only a gay person can tell you if it is choice or inborn. Get off your soap box, you have lost the cause...you have no idea what you are talking about. And I am not being defensive, just blunt. If you cannot accept blunt, then get the hell off the board. If you can, then re-read what I have written. You have no basis for any kind of thought in this matter if you are straight. Period.
