Anything from K-Mart's fine collection of flimsy burlap cocktail dresses will be a stunning and defining fashion moment. "Being from the UK." You of course mean the University of Kentucky at Lexington. I have noticed that you type with a Southern accent.

Prom is usually in late April or early May. But if you are planning on next year, you must wear a formal dress of any lenght. This doesn't mean it has to be poofy or with a gi-normous train. Just a nice fabric other than cotton or jersey and gussy it up with some nice shoes and earrings. Pick something you might wear again, like to a night wedding or a New Year Eve gala.
Oh, and you need to get him a boutinere...but they are easy to make.

Well if you're female (can't tell on a spider - sorry!) a fancy dress is usually the correct attire, yes.

Actually June isn't over and some people haven't been out of school yet. You may have a chance of going. Well you should wear whatever you feel is comfortable for you, not what "society" or other people say.
