I believe that as a tax paying american adult that i have the right to not protect myself without worry of a fine. I do not believe that the government needs to watch out for me so i dont make a boo boo. I do believe that these silly laws fill the local municipalities coffers so that may be one reason for them. I also believe that many in our government feel that the government must be a nanny, i disagree. I wear my seatbelt all the time and i did before it was a law to do so because it makes sense. I wear a helmet when i ride a motorbike, and i wear a helmet when i ski, even though there is no law against that one.
Why are there not stricter safety standards in the automobile industry if keeping us safe is the intent? Why no laws against breathing industrial pollution? Nascar drivers commonly crash at speeds exceeding 200 mph and almost always walk away. While i dont think we need to be strapped up quite as well as a nascar driver you get the point right?

There cases where wearing a seat belt has caused severe injuries even death and if the person had not been belted may not have suffered those injuries.
I'm at the other end of the argument. If I had been wearing a seatbelt I would've escaped injury, instead I ended up at the hospital.
As for belts locking up, even if the buckle stays locked there is enough slack to allow you to wriggle free of the belt.
Here in California it's illegal to ride in the back of a pickup.
I have yet to see a bus whether it's a charter, public transportation or school bus have seat belts installed.

I am TOTALLY AGAINST IT. I assume it is the same for the other states, but I know in PA motorcyclists can wear a helmet or not wear a helmet it is their choice. BUt not seat belts. WE do not have a choice in the matter. That is totally wrong. Not because motorcycleists dont have to, but because the choice to choose whether we wear one of not has been removed from us. It is clearly a money thing to gain more revenue. They could care less about our safety. So, not only does the state make money but the insurance companies. They are in bed together, I totally belive that. I am waiting to get a ticket as I purposely dont wear a seat belt so I can challenge it. Unfortunately, I just found out that the driver gets the ticket, not the passenger and I am usually the passenger. That totally sucks as I am just waiting on a ticket to start my legal challenge and gathering the people together to have this changed or removed. You know, fight the power. I am sick of being told what to do in areas it is just none of their business. It is MY CHOICE if I want to wear a seat belt or not. And just for your information, I have already been through one windshield in my life, so you would think I would be the first to "snap up" when I get in a vehicle. But its the choice thing that bothers me.

I think wearing a seatbelt in a care is just common sense. It's true that this whole "click or ticket" seat belt law is a big revenue thing for police. Some states, like New Hampshire, only have the law for people under 18 which makes sense to me. It doesn't really affect me though, because I always wear a seat belt anyway.

I believe for infant and children under twelve is mandatory. But, for an adult should be optional. I've been in a serious car incident over 90 mph, and had my seat belt on, but received serious neck and back injuries from the whipping motion. If, I didn't have my seat belt on, at least the driver would be busted and put in jail. Why, I was in the back seat behind the driver, and would have flied into his head causing both of us to be injuried and would have called police to the scene, that the driver GOYA reckless slammed on the brakes and ended off the road causing me 12 years of neck/back pain. The driver never got busted because he was an attorney in the State of Hawaii. The seat belt laws should be checked and balanced before innocent citizens become victims of crime.

That firefighter guy and the RKO guy are both right. The government is constantly violating our civil rights. They should not be able to tell us to wear a belt. That is our body and no-one should have the right to tell us what to wear on it. Next if we keep giving government the right to tell us everything to do, next they will come in our home and say our bed was not made right, we have to wear a tie in the car, etc etc. However the brain matter thing the fireman said really got me, however my mom's best friend died in a car fire could not get the belt off.

My mother was in an accident where - had she been wearing a seatbelt - she would have been killed, according to the investigators at the accident scene. Luckily, she was thrown clear and 'only' broke every bone in her body from her waist on down.
My sister was in an auto accident where she lost control of her car and it tumbled down a steep embankment. Her husband, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown out of the car and received only minor cuts and bruises. My sister, who was wearing a seatbelt, was trapped as the car turned end-over-end, collapsed on top of her and crushed her to death.
And, yes - I've wondered the same thing: if seatbelts are such lifesavers, why aren't they required to be installed in every school bus in the country???
I will never be convinced that seatbelts save lives. -RKO- 06/20/07

the law saws that you only have to buckle up if you are in the front seat or if you are younger than 12 years old. you can't sit in the back of a truck if you are younger than 12 because wou would have to be buckled. (or at least that is how it is in Louisiana.) i agree that it is a good idea to wear a seat belt, but i don't think it should be a law because it doesn't harm anyone but yourself

I think seatbelts do save lives and I think people 'should' buckle up, especially buckle up their children. HOWEVER, I feel like it's OUR business if we do or not. I don't think the government should control every aspect of our lives through these types of laws. The government wants to stick their noses into as much of our lives and control as much of it as they can. It's just one more way to suck money out of our pockets, through fines for NOT 'buckling up'. Next thing you know their going to be controlling how many medical checkups we get a year and fine us if we don't get them when THEY think we should. Too much invasion of privacy. IMHO

Hey, if a seat belt saves my life, then I want to live, man! I'm all for seat belts. And I wear my seat belt every time I drive, and also when I'm in the back seat.
