The word "mile" comes from the roman "mille", which was a thousand paces, a standard distance of measure for marching roman armies. But a pace is a double step, or the distance from where, say, your right strikes the ground to the next time it strikes it. So, that's 2,000 steps. However, we're bigger than even the early roman soldiers, so today it's somewhat less than 2,000 steps.

Depends on the size of the step - a tall man will take a longer step than a small child.
But the 'average' adult male step is about 3 feet (1 yard). Since there are 5280 feet in a mile, then that would be 5280 / 3 or 1760 steps (or yards).

assuming
(average) 1 human step = 1 ft

1 mile = 5280 ft
= 5280 * (1 ft)
= 5280 * (1 step)
= 5280 steps
