Silence is the absence of sound, sound is vibrations in the air which travel to your ear drums, if you hear something, then your ear drums are probably moving, thus it is not actually silent. You always hear sound, even when you would say it is "silent".

You can hear the slow moving of the air on a very quite day, some might call that silence.

I will address this in the literal sense:

If you were to go into a completely soundproof room - a room that blocks out all sound from the outside (an anechoic chamber), and do your best not to make any noise, you would still hear sound.

First, after you acclimate to the "silence," you might hear your blood pumping and other bodily processes such as breathing.

Second, if you suffer at all from tinnitus, you would in this case, hear a slight ringing in the ears.

For the most part, we're not going to have this luxury of the anechoic chamber, so we may often hear the running of appliances such as a fridge or anything else that produces a hum, even while all else is silent.

So, as long as you are alive and are not completely deaf, you will never experience absolute silence.

No, you're not insane. Depending on what kind of silence, but when you hear sound in silence is usually perceived as noise. Silence is not always lack of sound.

Good luck!

Think about being with a close friend or loved one after one of you has said something hurtful. The silence at moments like that is deafening.

Not really (though I suppose if you want to get technical, but this isn't the hard sciences section)

Silence allows you to hear your own thoughts better.

Do you mean does silence have it's own sound, sure it's like a vacuum it's full of nothing, absolute silence = nothing.

Silence is defined as the absence of sound, so you cannot hear silence.

You can definitely recognize it though.
