There is a clog in the main drain, so call a plumber, or your landlord. Leave this to a professional! Good luck!

If you have tried the plunger and it has not helped, than you really need to call the landlord and get a professional in to take care of it. Drano is a waste of money and muratic acid could ruin the toilet by taking the finish off it. Something is blocking it and if a plunger won't clear it, it'll need to be augured or the toilet will need to be pulled and cleared. The sewer could be plugged, too. A professional is needed in this situation.

Something is clogged. Maybe the clog started in your roommates drain line and has gradually moved down past the point where yours connects so now you both have the problem.

Call a plumber. You need the line snaked out.

go to a hardware store and buy a kit for uncloging all drains. it consists of a can of pressureized air and several rubber devices that fit assorted drains, including a toilet drain. you place the rubber device that fits the toilet drain and attach the can and other devices that go with the can together. you then place the can into the rubber device that has a hole in the bottom of it and push down on the device holding the can using short bursts. you only get about 10 air bursts from the can. make sure the rubber device fits snugly into the toilet,
you don't want the air from the can to go anywhere but down the toilet drain. it costs about $15.00 for the unit. i have used it on different drains in my home. if it hasn't worked after three tries you may need help. while drain snakes are good they don't always go in far enough. make sure there's enough water in the toilet bowl so air can't escape anywhere but down the drain. IT'S JUST HIGH PRESSURE AIR. hope it works for ya. adamstierle08096@yahoo.com
