I was diagnosed with Bipolar I a few months back. But I'm not sure if i really am. I mean a few days back I was extremely suicidal, I mean literally having a plan of action. Days passed..I thought less of it. This morning after I went for a drive with my mum, all of a sudden I had a feeling of happiness. I got all these ideas, on what I should do..classes I should join..on and on. After a while...I almost felt like I was kind of shaking. I asked my mum "am I really bipolar? just a few days back i was so suicidal and now i'm sooo happy. so much so i feel like i need something to calm me down" she quickly assured me saying "oh no..this is completely normal! I was sad too a few days back and now i'm happy! You are just excited and happy because you finally found a job." Seems like she doesn't want to accept that I have something like bipolar. I'm confused...is it normal...just coz docs diagnosed me as having bipolar...do I??

Go get another Doctors/psycologist opinion. Sounds like you Have Depression! I have Manic Depression in my family and you dont sound that bad from what you are sharing.(renamed bipolar to be PC) Your mom has no idea of what is really in your head, but it was a nice thing to say. You know something is not right, so it wont hurt to see if you may need a little help. When you get on the right medication, you will feel so much better. Take care of yourself.

I really hope my response doesn't upset you. There always is a possibility that your diagnosis was false..but according to my research, it just sounds like a normal side-effect for the Bipolar disorder.

Individuals suffering a bipolar disorder generally experience fluid states of mania, hypo-mania or what is referred to as a mixed states in concert with clinical depression. Mania is a severe medical condition characterized by extremely elevated mood, energy, and unusual thought patterns. There are several possible causes for mania, but it is most often associated with bipolar disorder, where episodes of mania may cyclically alternate with episodes of clinical depression. From your description I would guess that you are only suffering from mania. In your case you were extremely happy. Also, I would guess that you are going through Ultra-rapid mood swings. This means that your mood may change several times a week, or even several times a day. This is rare, but certainly a variant of the disorder. I suspect this because these mood patterns are usually associated with distress and disruption, and a relatively high risk of suicide. I advise that you ask an adult to monitor you to make sure that your depression doesn't get the best of you. Also, for your benefit, you could document you mood in a journal. Every time you feel a heightened emotion, record it in a notepad along with the date and time. I hope this all helps you. Good luck in the future.

Well don't always believe what doctors tell you... bipolar in my opinion is more like your happy one minute the sad the next usually not within a few days.... you could have just been going through a tough time felt suicidal ... i have been there and felt the same thing... and I don't consider myself bipolar.

You're pretty much describing classic bipolar behavior. Extreme mood changes with no real reason. If you were formally diagnosed as being bipolar, are you not on medication? You should be, and your moods will be more leveled. You especially need to be seeing a psychologist/psychiatrist regularly if you are having suicidal thoughts.

Tthat is the classic symptom of bipolar, up one minute down the next. The best thing to do is to keep following up with your doctor, and keep a journal so you can see you patterns; also when your feeling down or sad, take jog or a fast walk, this will get those endorphins going. Its like a natural anti depressant. good luck : )

You may have it, but I don't know you and how you act. Do your emotions change often? Do thoughts race your head? Is there a list of things that you have in your head that you got to do? It also can run in families. Your mother may have it without knowing it and that is the reason she is saying your behavor is normal. I hope you continue to get the help you need. Ask questions when you are seen by your doctors and keep up with the help your recieving, it will make your life that much easier to live and deal with. Good luck.

It sounds like you do to me, but you should trust your doctor. My grandmother was bipolar. Mood swings are a big part of it. Feeling deeply depressed and then energetic and excited are symptoms. Especially feeling so wound up you need help to calm down. I am sure your doctors evaluated you carefully. I would continue any meds or therapy they suggested.

I'm not a trained professional but have read a lot about it, and your description seems consistent with BiPolar disorder. But that's not conclusive. I hope your Dr has prescribed proper meds, which may consist of a mix of antidepressants and anti-convulsives.

Yes, dear. You ARE bi-polar. They make medicine for that. You are the typical" very up" and "very down "that characterizes bi-polar disorder. Get treatment now so you can enjoy being on an even keel at all times. The ups and downs of bi-polar are no fun... not for you, and not for those around you.

I am not sure you do -

racing thoughts
unaware of surroundings
pressured / fast speech
grandiose ideas
can't concentrate
severe mood swings

doctors still dont' know what bipolar is -all they know is that you meet certain observable traits, they dont' know what it is or what causes it.
