To me this is a move tword a facist state .

Corperate ownership of government Control of the peole Control of the media - Increased powers with no right to trial or representation

The elimination of scrutiny - The removal of a judge from watching directing and instructing the police agencies -

The dismantleing of laws that pertain to human rights - The clandestine camps and the absolution of cromes commited by government agents -

How can anyone not say that this is a a loss of freedoms ?

I largely agree with you in principle when you state "if you give up any of your rights and freedoms, you have already lost", but it's a little more complex than that imo. In the instance that the country were legitimately threatened by another nation-state, it's unfortunate but necessary that the President be vested with the power of declaring the suspension of some civil liberties if absolutely necessary, such as if the President had to declare emergency martial law. The problem in this instance is that we're not fighting a defined enemy. According to Bush, we're at war with "terror", and terror is an intangible "ism". It's a political tool, not a definable enemy. There will NEVER be any clear victory or defeat, and hence the suspension of any civil liberties could conceivably last indefinitely. Imo, we should NEVER be willing to suspend ANY civil liberty when there is no clearly defined enemy or objective we're fighting, because that simply gives the government complete and sole power to determine when the conflict is over and liberties may be reinstated. And it's an axiom that once you cede power to a power-seeking entity, that entity will almost never return the power voluntarily.

We need serious oversight as long as this patriot act is in force. I also believe there needs to be some changes to this. This bothers me as much, if not more, than the terrorists. I also think the media has been effected by all of this. Too much unnecessary government secrecy which also causes a lack of trust.

Yes the Patriot Act is flawed, but the intentions were good.

You are ranting a bit incoherently. Take a deep breath and count the weeks until January 2009 when Bush is out on his ear. Then pray for sanity to return.

Perhaps you don't realize that democracies have to do this in war-time.
Maybe you are too young to remember WWII.

If you don't realize we're at war, take a look at this:
