Most IT departments don't have the resources to monitor every little thing you do. What they do, however, is flag certain words, and these can be reported. This also applies to websites you may visit. They also may pull up reports of anyone they suspect of abusing the system. In the US, they do have the legal right to monitor all electronic storage and traffic. As long as you're not abusing the stated rules and company policies, you have nothing to worry about. Most of the time, common sense is all you need.

It's their company, their resources and they're paying you to do a job. So, they have the right to monitor you if they suspect abuse. My company does it randomly.

Today companies are concerned with reduced production because of Internet abuse. Billions of dollars are lost in man hours each year to this. By abuse, meaning personal use of the Internet on company time. Not only does this waste company resources of the time they are paying you for, but also bandwidth you are using to stream videos, download software, check Yahoo answers, etc.

If you aren't doing anything wrong, you shouldn't be concerned. Otherwise, it's time to get wise or say your good byes.

Understand your company's internet policy. My company indicates that occasional personal use is OK. So, I may visit espn.com or occassionally read a news story.

If your company's policy is absolute then you'll have to adhere to their rules. Yes, companies can monitor their employees. However it's typically not in real-time. They can go back and look at all of your search records, even your email. This all depends on the company.

Also, it is time consuming to look at everyone's internet surfing/email. The odds are that if you're under performing they'll review it.

I think you have a real problem if you can not control your porn obsession. And yes, it is an obsession if you are willing to risk your job to look at a penis during a time you are being paid to perform your work. There is no excuse and you will just have to accept the consequences of your actions. You need some help from a counselor who specializes in sexual addiction to help you evaluate your obsessive sexual obsession that is interfering with your normal day to day activities. When you can't stop even at work, you have a problem. Getting help now may give you some leverage with your boss if you have any hope of keeping your job. Good luck.

It's usually quite legal for them to do so. However, there are circumstances (depending on you local and laws), where this can conflict with data protection laws. For instance, if you are a teacher/trainer using the computer to evaluate student work or you are inputting data related to other people, then monitoring under these conditions can be an offence as it is private and confidential information

Exercise common sense. When online, make sure you don't visit websites that may contain viruses or are not approved securely.

IT people are usually told to monitor networked areas by a company, and there's not much you can do.

My advice. Exercise caution, and when in doubt.. don't do it.

welcome to corporate america. your employeer has every right to monitor what the employees are doing on the company network. if you were actually doing your job you wouldn't have to worry about such things

They can't technically track what you're doing unless they have a suspicion to do so. If you're doing something you're not suppose, they have a right to check your email, web browsing activity, etc. In other words, stop looking at pr0n at work.
