We are going mid-July and have a toddler. We will be staying at Kirkwood. One thing I would like to do is go on a glass bottomed boat. Any other suggestions?

1Take excursion boat to Emerald Bay; tour the house there (Vikingsholm).
2Go to the Forest Service Visitor Center at Taylor Creek. They have a glass walled creek; pretty interesting.
3It's expensive, but quite a view from the lookout platform at Heavenly Valley Gondola, which you catch in the shopping mall right next to Stateline. You get to see the sights without having to hike it. (don't park in the expensive parking garage near the gondola base; park for free at the nearest casino and walk a few minutes extra)
4. Good hike to take with a young one is from Kit Carson Pass visitor center to Frog Lake - one mile in each direction; not as steep as most SLT area hikes, with fantastic views near the end. Water is warm enough to swim at and there are a few "beaches" there. Not far from Kirkwood. I am assuming you'll be carrying the little guy most of the way and you have equipment to do so. Otherwise, stick to the nature walks in the visitor center area near Taylor Creek area.
5. There are several beach areas, including Pope's Beach, that might work for you.
6. If you love a good burger, I have to put in a plug for Izzy's Burger Spa in So. Lake Tahoe...Onion Orgy is my favorite. Some of the best burgers I've ever had in my life. Good breakfast places include Ernie's and Red Waffle Hut.
7. There are a few outlet stores at the "Y" but they are not all that special. People just don't go there to shop.
8. The fly fishing in the West Carson River was pretty good and that'll be close to where you are staying. There's a fly fishing store in SLT with equipment, advice and guides if you are interested.
9. Unfortunately, I believe the Poderosa Ranch where they filmed Bonanza is now closed. Boo!
Kirkwood is nice but it'll be a drive to So Lake Tahoe, so you might want to group together your SLT excursions to save from constant driving. Most people who go to Kirkwood are probably into outdoor stuff, and with the little one you have limitations.

I just came back from my annual trip to SLT area and the weather was fantastic!! The snow pack was only 30% of normal so there's almost no snow left at the highest elevations; some years there would still be considerable snow above 8,000 feet. Not this year.

You might want to check before leaving home to see if Kirkwood is still standing! Last I heard that forest fire was only 10% contained and they were evacuating people out of the area. It's not too late to change your destination!

Are you sure you still want to go to Lake Tahoe? I'd cancel reservations and go someplace else. It won't be pretty or probably clear in the air by then.
