My apartment is offering me free carpet cleaning or a $50 gas card to renew my lease, but I can't decide which one.
I walk to work but I can always use the gas, but I could use the carpet cleaning as well. Which one?

My carpet isn't that bad, and I can probably do it myself for like $30. I've lived here a year. My friend says my carpet stinks, but he says everything stinks so I'm not sure if I believe him.

Depends on how bad your carpet stinks. If the carpet is not too funky, it can probably be cleaned with a basic foam cleaner and a vacuum and I would take the gas. However if its really "stanky", go for the cleaning.

You leave a lot of information out of your question. How long have you been renting? What is expected of the leasing company for any renewal? How much is a carpet cleaning worth? If you were a brand new leasor wouldn't you expect your carpet to be cleaned anyways?
In reality it sounds like you are getting the short end of the stick and they are making you happy to be getting screwed.pp

Get your carpets cleaned.
Especially if you plan to be there for a while, it could be five years before you get the same offer again.
$50 bucks is only about a tankfull of gas and you're hoofing it anyway and besides, wouldn't you like to come home to freshly cleaned carpets anyway.

Oh, gas for sure...yes, yes, gas!!! Its 3.00 a gallon, so you can fill your car up and then some. Save it for a rainy day and then next year when you renew your lease, if you do, then get the carpet cleaning. I am sure your carpet can use it then.

If you haven't had anyone come in and clean that carpet you may want it... Plus you staying for a little while longer... Gas is a plus but it may not give you 10 gallons at this rate...

Since you walk to work, why not take the free carpet cleaning? It would cost far more to hire someone on your own and stay home while they clean your carpet.

As a rule of thumb carpets ought to be cleaned every three months so I would advise you to clean your carpets before you get sick and your whole house smells.
