Wrong wrong and wrong. There are poisonous mushrooms too. Mushrooms have "gills" on the bottom of the cap that contain spores, todastools don't and often have a spongy underside instead.

I was told in addition to what has all ready been written that a toad stool had a ring around its stem under the cap, and a mushroom does not.
BUT as you can see by the answers DO NOT try to pick and eat what you are not sure of!

Toadstools are merely a nickname for a wide variety of mainly poisonous mushrooms that grow in the wild. So Toadstools are mushrooms.
