I have had problems with my lower back since age 14 ( i am now 33) - back then the doctor diagnosed a muscular sprain. Occasionally i have mild problems with pain, but occasionally i experience an episode so bad that i need prescription anti-inflammetries and ibuprofen which work very well . I have a toddler to look after but i can barely walk, and i cant really leave the house, too painful.

Unfortunately i cant take those now because i am pregnant. I have tried paracetemol, it didnt work.

I have 3 questions:

1) Has anyone suffered similar problems - i.e. severe back pain in pregnancy? What did your doctor prescribe if anything?

2) Can anyone recommend any non-medical treatment for my condition? Massages are a bit tricky because of the huge bump.

3) DO you think it will last my whole pregnancy or do such things usually go away bu themselves eventually (please say yes!!)

I had a sore back while pregnant. I went to the GP who referred me to a physio. I went to see him about 5 or 6 times during my pregnancy and it really helped. Physios are used to dealing with pregnant women and are able to get around the bump issue. I had massages/ manipulation while on my side.
I doubt that your sore back will just go away by itself. It can easily get overstrained during pregnancy. A physio will be able to sort out the muscles and give you advice on reducing the strain.
Your GP can refer you to an NHS physio, but there can be a wait. Otherwise, pay to go and see one.

I have really bad back problems and am now 7.5 months pregnant with my second bub...
1) doc said all i could have was paracetemol....
2) I found going for a walk/swim in my local (heated in winter... even better) pool, it took the pressure off my back a bit because you feel 'weightless' in the water. Some centres offer pregnancy massage (I am in Australia, can't imagine it would be too different where you are), they use the a table with a hole in middle for your belly... i go once a month. I also go to my chiropractor every two weeks (i normally go once a month but need it more often now pregnant), its a wonderful relief... not instantly but a couple of hours later... heaven!
3) It hasn't gone away and didn't last pregnancy either... all I could do was make myself feel more comfortable.

P.S. I sleep with a long body pillow, with the bottom half between my legs, lots more comfy at night.

I have this in my lower back. Im only 21 weeks but ive been having the pains nearly constantly since 15 weeks. I have been told that the baby is layin on my sciatic nerve, which is the biggest nerve in your back. What i have been told to do (and believe me it helps) is get on all fours on the floor (make sure no one is looking through your window cos this will look a bit weird) and then rock back and forward. The baby should move after about 5 minutes of doing this. Then make sure you dont slouch on the sofa, keep your back straight. Its uncomfortable but better than the back pain. If the baby doesnt move then go and see your doctor. Good luck.

i have a disability in my legs and im also not allowed painrelief as im a bleeder my back gets troubled because of the way i walked over the years so i know where youre coming from.heres what i did,vic vapour rub has numbing qualities and so rub this into your back the numbness and the heat generated at least soothes when sat sit on your side on your thigh with a cushion between your legs to alighn your back.equally when in bed sleep on your side with a pillow cradling the bum raising it higher to stop it pulling your back out of shape and another between your legs for the same reason.it may leave huns as you body aclimatises to your new shape and as the baby moves to other positions xxx
