On the contrary goldfish can be housed in a bowl. the oldest goldfish on record "goldie" lived to be 43 years old and lived in a bowl.
the key to keeping a goldfish in a bowl is to keep the right kind of goldfish in the right kind of bowl. NO HEATER. A large enough bowl will house a fantail or fancy just fine. no filter, no airbubbles etc. The main thing you want to remember is to keep the bowl clean. Changing 1/2 the water in the bowl when you see it is dirty or no less than once per week will keep him healthy and happy. Do not over feed and feed him 3 times per day small amount. If you see fish waste on the bottom of the bowl, use a new turkey baster and suck it out. This will help to keep his bowl clean.
Good luck.

No, a goldfish cannot be kept in a bowl. Many people are under the impression that "a goldfish will only grow to the size of its container" but what really happens is that the goldfish's internal organs will become stunted and deformed since he doesn't have enough room to grow.

No, you cannot keep a goldfish in a bowl successfully. Goldfish are messy eaters and big poopers, so they need a larger tank with excellent filtration. The minimum tank size for a 2 inch goldfish is around 8 gallons.

A bowl is a death sentence for a goldfish. It's a common misconception that they can live in a bowl. For common goldfish they need about 30 gallons per fish to be healthy.

Don't get a bowl for a Goldfish, if you have to get a bowl, get it for a Betta (and that is still a little cruel).

No bowls. You are a victim of a sad myth that has been perpetrated for generations.
I walked into a small pet shop today trying to sell my aquarium installation and maintenance services to them.
They had a 37 gallon tank with about 100 3" common goldfish.
The filter was this...

hardly adequate tank and almost pointless amount of filtration.
Because the retailer doesn't care and he knows a cheap item sells easier to more people, he's more than happy to perpetuate this horrible myth.
Don't believe it for a second.

Hi, well, I've had three Beta fish, they are wonderful pets. You can keep a goldfish in a bowl, but you have to have the right chemicals, because if you dont the water gets all smurky and the goldfish could die...I learned that the hard way.Well, good luck with raising that goldfish!

I'm sure you can keep it in a gold fish bowl. It's a matter of perspective. Is your fish just a pet that you don't care about? Or would you be really upset if it died? Some people take owning fish more seriously then others, and feel it is inhumane to keep a fish in a bowl.

You can never keep goldfish in bowls.
They grow to large, and produce too much waste to be kept in a bowl.
