Most laptops come with wireless cards. While 802.11N is touted as being the fastest, it's still in development and has not lived up to the hype. Make sure your wireless card has 802.11G. If it also works with A and B, that is just icing on the cake. You will have access at most public "hotspots."
If you want wireless at home, invest in a Cable Modem and a Wireless Router. I would go with a 802.11G MIMO standard. "Speedboost" is not MIMO, don't be fooled.

For access everywhere, you would want to buy a wireless card from AT&T or Verizon. The wireless works off of the cell phone towers, but it often has a limit on the amount of gibabites of data that you can download in a month.

If you are buying a new laptop such as an Apple MacBook, it is able to connect to a wireless router right out the box. Wireless is built in. On Windows based computers, you may have to order wireless as an option.

Once you have that, you can surf wirelessly anywhere there is an open wireless network.

If you want your own, you will have to get a wireless router to connect to your internet service.

I'd buy a laptop with an internal wireless card. As far as every thing else is concerned what do YOU need.

There's nothing really to do. Nowadays you just buy a laptop, it will normally have a buildt in wireless card, if not you buy one. But most likely you don't have to buy one. And that is basically it.

You can go to the Dell website and build the type of laptop you want to your specification. Also on their site, you can buy used laptops which former customers were not satisfied and purchase them for a few bucks.

I just came across a site that sends you a laptop for free! I'm ordering mine right now, it's a Sony VAIO and it looks really hot!
