i just bought this black Ranger about i'd say 4 months ago.. its a big fixer uper... i replace brake shoe, wheel cylinder, fuil pump, stering coupler flex disc( steering box) and air filter. i know these don't upgrade the engine, but it drives me crazy when i can only go 55-60 on the freeway. because if i got 65 i will be redlining the engine...

Do you know of any thing i can do to make the engine better to make it go faster than 55,60 on the freeway... or anyway i can upgrade the engine???

thanks

You shouldn't be at red-line at 55-65 mph, this sounds like a transmission problem. But for hot rodding an engine you can change many parts.... including....

Heads
Camshaft
Intake manifold
Carburetor
Headers
Pistons and rings

Just about every part can be changed.

the reason it will be red lining it is the gear ratio it has in the rear differential, and there's a lot of upgrades you can do to that one ,headers ,exhaust ,intake and carburetor, anything you can do to it will help it,you have one of the older higher compression engines,so the sky,s the limit on that one, those can easily crank out some real good horse power, but you,ll have to get that rear end gear changed for any good speed on the road, that truck was geared for puling and hauling things, most older ones was, change the rear end in it,and it would probably run with anything on the high way ,id do that before i got in to changing running parts, because it probably already runs more horse power than most of the trucks on the road today do,find you a good gear for the rear end and first see what that does for it,i think you,ll be surprised with it,good luck hope this helps.

so your saying you have a chevy 350 in your ford pickup truck?? I think you don't know what your talking about it's probably a 5.8L..And to the guy that answered first is a young punk who has no clue what he's talking about! They did have a full size truck that was a 'RANGER", I had 2 of these, one in 1969,and one in 1976.He probably thinks a ranger is only the little truck they make right now,he thinks this cause he's ignorant on this subject and should keep his dumb little punk mouth shut...........

If it's four wheel drive, you may have the transfer case in "low" range.

The smaller selector gear thingie on the floor.
Move it to (2H) two wheel High range.
