Reflexes are caused by little bundles of nerves along the spinal cord. Thus you can't really control your reflexes; as my 4th grade science teacher put it, let's say you step on a hot coal. It will take about a second for the information to go through your spinal cord to your brain, and another second for the signal to go back down to move the foot. With the bundles of nerves, it takes maybe a quarter of a second to reach the bottom of the spinal cord, and another quarter for another signal to go back. Either way you're on hot coals for quite a long time, but half a second is better than sizzling for 2.

Reflexes are a natural, instinctive response by your Peripheral Nervous System (involuntary) to an outside stimulus. They protect you from hurting yourself. Examples: withdrawing your hand from a hot stove burner, bending a limb or tightening a limb in response to being struck on a reflex point (knee) or in response to a muscle, tendon, or ligament being over-flexed (hyperextended) on purpose (while exercising) or accidently (your neck and head snapping foward and backward rapidly-whiplash-during a car wreck). Good luck on your test!

Reflexes are important because if your on fire, your reflex is to put out the fire. Therefore, you do not burn to death. Also, if something deadly is coming at you, your reflex is to run, or flinch.
This is the best answer I can think of.
But don't hate me if it's a bad answer.
I'm only in 7th grade!

Just an example. How long do you want to leave your hand on a hot stove before your reflex pulls it away?
