if you haven't checked gas for condensation, remove old gas and add fresh to tank. Mine did same from one season to another and once I changed it, ran about 5 minutes sputtering than resumed normal operation.

If your lawn mower dies when your cutting grass it's my best knowledge that you need a valve job done.

Since your tight with money right now, you can do it your self, but it would take me some typing how to do it.

The problem is that once you put a load on that lawmower blade the engine can;t power up because your losing compression through the intake valve.

Remove the intake valve and grind that stem down just a tad so that the valve will seat and not let compression escape.

You can do this in the field, but you meed the knowledge how to remove that valve and use a screw driver to pop the valve spring off and then use a screw drvier to pop it back on.

I am experienced in doing this in the field as a cheap route and get the job done.
In the best profession...you need a valve job done and your problem is solved.

If your mower only dies under load, it could be worn valves, badly scored cylinder walls or a blown/loose head gasket. The head gasket is easy to fix, the other two problems are complicated to describe the repair. Also some mowers have various safety levers/handles that kill the engine if you let go, sometimes they get out of adjustment and stop the engine intermittently even if your holding it. You might be able to get a book on small engine repair out of the local library, look up the diagnosis & repair procedures, and see if it is worth the effort. Also, you can get used lawnmowers at garage/moving sales relatively cheap. Just make certain they run it and cut some grass with it, so you don't get another busted one.

Spark plug and air cleaner are the problem if it starts then dies 99% of the time. Replace the plug, rinse or replace the air filter.

I think it would be wise to change the oil and change the gas too. While you are at it, you might as well put some STP into your new gas when you fill the gas can.

If this doesn't get it going I'm afraid you may have some real problems but because it starts and then dies, I bet this works for you.
