You are the umpire behind the plate.
Yankee stadium.
Derek Jeter is at bat and has a full count.
The next pitch appears to you to be just above his knees and catches the inside corner.
Jeter doesn't swing so you ring him up.
Furious, Jeter starts arguing with you about the called third strike.
What do you do?

a) Throw him out of the game for arguing balls and strikes. And then run like hell before the crowd throws you out of the game.

b) Confer with the other umpires to see if any of them saw the pitch any better.

c) Admit that you are wrong and award Jeter 1st base, because, he's Derek Jeter for crying out loud. If he didn't swing it has to be a ball and you must have made a bad call.

d) Other...You tell me.

A, without the running away part, and then I would think about pulling a Vick by two fisting the crowd, and I would become the first umpire to be kicked out of the game by another umpire. I would be smiling the whole time.

A....but i wouldn't run....if any yankee fan has a problem i'll let him come down onto the field and i'll handle them myself....i'd be lenient w/ jeter but if he gets too serious then i'd eject him....i might eject a-rod immediately though....

if it was a check swing then i'd confer w/ other umpires...but nobody else would have a shot at judging the pitch than myself.....

in all fairness i'm a boston fan though..i might keep a bat on me at all times in yankee stadium

As an umpire, you're supposed to be a professional. As you would with any batter, you have an obligation to toss him from the game for arguing the call. It doesn't matter if it's Derek Jeter or Michael Jeter - the same rules apply to everyone.

The correct answer is A. but without the running. You would not need to because it is about a quarter mile to the plate from the stands and security would have anyone neutralized before they get to you. Called third strikes are a part of the game be it in the first or the ninth.

As an umpire you never give in. Umpires will usually sit an listen to a players or managers tirade. But at the first moment they start calling the umpire names or start to use foul language they're ejected.

"What did you call mother... You're outta here!!"

As a student of the game and its rules(and as much as it pains me being a Yankee fan), it has to be A. Players and Managers are not allowed to argue balls and strikes, and is cause for immediate ejection, per MLB Umpire rules, ever since the Roberto Alomar incident of September of 1996.

d) kick Jeter out of the game and when Torre comes out crying kick him out 2. When the crowd starts to jeer call anything close against the yanks since you already ticked them off.

D. Other. Let him rant for a few seconds, but toss him if it got out of hand. If I'm the ump, I'll call 'em as I see 'em, no matter who's at bat. If he disagrees, tough. Next batter, play ball.

e) Call over Jeters boyfriend who is sitting in the front row of tonight's game and have him settle Jeter down.
