We have a American Red Nosed Pit Bull. She is 70 lbs. and could stand to lose 10-15 lbs. She is very lazy, and usually eats once during mid-morning and again before she goes to bed. I try to limit her food, but it is hard to monitor because we have another dog. She has a large backyard to run around in. She is outside off and on for about 8 hours a day. The other dog is under a year old, they play all day long. She likes to sleep about 12 hours through the night. If I leave her outside in the heat for a long period of time, she comes in and pants for about 20 minutes. Thanks...

I might add too...that I can't walk her, because of the other dogs that run loose around here. I'm scared that she might attack them if they growl at her. It would be too hard for me to control her.

My dog has never attacked another. But I will not take a chance. She also has never initiated it. I have seen her growl back and stand ready when another female dog has run up to her. We live in the country, where dogs run loose legally. As for being able to control her...even being on a leash is not enough to to control a muscular 70 lb. dog when it is trying to fight. I had to "get rid" of my male stafforshire terrier because of this. You ppl don't realize how hard you have to beat a pit to get them let loose of another dog.

Try Science Diet Light for large adult dogs. It is a little on the expensive side, but I have friends with overweight dogs who absolutely swear by it.

First, feed both dogs for a limited time twice a day. One dog on one side of the room and the other well, over there. Watch the dogs while you are feeding.

I put the food down and if it is done early then I pick up the bowl, otherwise it is 15 minutes to eat, period. Try walking her on a leash in your back yard. It is good training for her, gives her time with you and gets her that much needed exercise.

I am not sure what games the two dogs are playing but if it is mostly physical for the younger one it does her no good.

Also, try taking her in the car to a dog park or another area of town to take her for a walk. My dog and I hike all over the place. It makes the exercise that much more fun.

Regarding dogs wandering your neighborhood. Loose dogs are a danger to everyone. Do you know who the owner is? If you don't you need to call your animal control or a rescue group. Dogs without a home can not only threaten you and your dog but any kids in the neighborhood. I love dogs and hate the idea of one being put down, but isn't it better to not be afraid to take your leashed dog on a walk because of htem?

The only thing you can do is exercise her! Even if you get a leash and walk her around the perimeter of the yard. Powerful breeds especially need tons of exercise to drain their aggression. If she was in shape, she might not be attacking other dogs.

You have to get up and do it. If you can't control her.... you know.

Edit: Then maybe you should try a choke chain. I see people control dogs that size all the time. I have seen dogs that big start fights with other dogs, and the owner has successfully controlled them with no damage done. The point of this is not to criticize, it's to help. If your dogs play all day long then she's not really lazy???

It is difficult to exercise a dog enough to lose weight. You have to cut back on calories, just like us! Measure her food with a measuring cup and feed the same amount each day. See what you are feeding her now, and reduce by 1/4. Reweigh her in a month and see if you are making progress. If not, reduce another 1/4. When you run your hands over the ribs, it should be easy to feel the ribs, but you shouldn't be able to see them. If you have to push in to feel them, then the pet is overweight.

Many companines are coming out with weight-loss foods. I would recommend putting her on one of these foods and start feeding the dogs seperatly.

I know you say you can't walk her, but if you ever decide to try, there are plenty of control collars (many very harmless) that you could train her with so that you can control her. She would probably be a happier dog with the walks even if there is no weight loss effect.

Good luck.

feed them seperately. Feed her twice a day. On the bag it should tell you how much to feed for her weight (feed for a 60lb dog if you want her to loose weight). For example if it says give 4 cups of food give her 2 cups in the am and 2 cups in the pm. If that doesn't work try switching her to a light food. Buy the way-if the young dog is on puppy food, which it still should be, don't let her eat the puppy food. Puppy food is very rich, to give the pup lots of calories to grow.

don't leave food down. feed each of them seperately.

dogs do get heat stroke so you must use caution with both dogs.

she needs to be walked twice a day in the cooler times for about 20 minutes each day

She really needs exercise! Put her on a tredmill. Ceasar Millan does it all the time on "The Dog Whisperer". Also no treats except carrots, apples...etc. If it's healthy for us, it's healthy for her.
