I pretty much only run IE and MS Word. I am planning to buy a system with an Intel Pentium dual-core processor T2080 operating at 1.73GHz and 512 MB of RAM running WindowVista. Will that be enough so that it runs smoothly?

No the computer will not run smoothly with only 512 MB of RAM. Windows Vista requires at least 1 GB of RAM but I recommend 2 GB. I have 3 GB and there are no problems but I know that 512 will definitely be very slow. Also you might want to get a dual-core processor that runs at more than 2 GHz.

I think you should not get a 32 bit system. Vista 64 bit is going to be longer life than 32. So go for a Core 2 Duo CPU. For Vista ram 512 is minimum. Normally you need 3 times more. Eg. Windows Xp min ram was 64MB. For running XP you really need 256 MB and above. So I will say you need 2 GB ram for good speed. I tried Vista with 512 MB and it's not fun.

Not only RAM you also need a average graphics card 128 MB cards are normally 50$ range. Don't go for a shared memary card that slows Vista a lot.

Don't listen to these ppl, you'll be fine with this pc if you just use ei and MS Word. You don't need 1 GB for all versions of vista. I put home premium on my friends 512 and it runs perfect. I would suggest although that you do get at least a gigabyte of ram, but i mean the dual processor will work great. Don't let ppl tell you vista will run slow, only ultimate would give you some lag because it uses more advanced GUI and ram. You don't need a video card either, shared will work just fine.

With 512MB of Ram and running only IE and MS Word I would want to run Windows XP myself. It will run smoothly and faster than Vista on 512MB.

The T2080 isn't fast processor but certainly fast enough for what you are running. Also, integreted graphics usually suck, but they are certainly fast enough for what you are doing.

If you go with Vista Basic the computer will run ok, but if you start opening up multiple windows it will slow down. 1Gb of ram would be a better idea. If you use Vista Premium (or better) then yes your machine will start to lag with 512MB ram.

No if you want to run Vista you would need atleast 1 gig. If you have 512 you will get alot of hangup or freezes.
