Would the human race advance at a quicker pace? I don't mean not having fun. But ignorant behavior like doing drugs, which is only a temporary high but has much more negative effects. Being a Crip or Blood, killing each other over colors. Wearing expensive name brands just because their the current trend, but you know you wouldn't have brought them otherwise. If people weren't so preoccupied with pointless things, atleast if the majority woke up, do you think we would have accomplished many things quicker? All the minds that are wasted is pretty amazing when if focused on issues that actually matter, we could have already found a cure for AIDS, put an end to drug abuse, decrease homelessness, etc. Anyone thinks this is realistic?

Yes, absolutely. You mentioned Crips and Bloods. If you watch documentaries on street gangs, or even organized crime, you have to realize the amount of organizational genius that goes into setting up and running these groups. If that kind of mental energy was channeled into something positive, it would be amazing.

Unfortunately, it is these very same "evils" that are filling the voids in our society!

People first turn to drugs because they are physically unable to handle some emotional pain (or even ACTUAL pain in some cases)...

Young kid first join gangs because they offer a sense of "family" and "belonging" that are lacking at home...

"Trendy" individuals have been bombarded by ads and Hollywood for decades to believe that wearing nothing but designer names (and dropping them into EVERY conversation) will somehow fill an empty part of their lives...

And the list goes on...

In one form or another, they are all filling an empty hole in their lives - or simply looking for a way to make the pain go away. It is all an ADDICTION - and a perfect chance for those in control (be they dealers, gang leaders, or multi-billion dollar corporations) to make an easy buck!

Most of this all stems from family life (or a lack of one) - and all the pains and traumas that the world throws at ALL of us.

Some of us are able to cope with only "minor" vices - like hitting up a tub of Ice Cream when we get depressed. Others (myself included) try to bottle everything up until one day we explode!

Unfortunately, I have to disagree with your point - replacing one set of "coping tools" would only create another (possibly worse) set. Most of the problems you have mentioned are merely symptoms of a greater issue - the breakdown of our entire system of family and community.

As long as one group continues to hate another - and this hate is passed on to the next generation - then there will be dysfunctional families all across the board. And whenever something that deeply bred into someone - it might take several generations (each taking their own small step) to turn a wayward trend around.

I think that IF our society had turned out differently - perhaps more like things are on FICTIONAL shows such as "star trek" (where there is no war, no famine, and no disease - at least on earth) - then we would have found all these answers.
