I know that military housing allows for you to have the number of bedrooms that you have depends (ie 2 bedrooms if you have 1 child). We are about to move to a different station (NAS Pensacola). We are currently pregnant with 2nd child. Can we go ahead and get a 3 bedroom, or will they make us get a 2 bedroom and then request 3 bedroom when we have our child?

The rule usually is one bedroom for each 2 kids of the same sex up to age 10, or one bedroom for each 2 kids of different sex through age 5. Once the eldest child hits age 5 or 10 you can apply for larger digs.

The sponsor's rank can affect the minimum bedroom count as well. Typically E-1 through E-6 and O-1 through O-3 only qualify for a 2 bedroom unit unless the number of children exceed the above standards. Above that, the minimum is 3 bedrooms regardless of family size.

Most of the time the installation commander can authorize either more liberal or more stringent standards based upon the availability of housing. I lucked out once and got a brand new 4 bedroom unit when a large number of them were made available all at once, even though we only had one child. The housing office cleared the waiting list all at once when that happened!

Contact the housing office at your new duty station and they'll let you know what the local conditions are and how long the waiting lists are. Sometimes you can fast-track into MHF by opting for one bedroom less. Once you accept a unit you generally have to remain in that one for at least 1 year before you can go back on the list for a larger one.

How far along are you? Is there a waiting list if you get in a 2 bedroom and then need to change so quickly into a 3 bedroom? Can both your child and the newborn share a room if they are young? These are questions that might arise.

Just be sure that you are able to have your answers before hand. Maybe the Chaplain can help. They do know answers to the general questions about housing or if they don't they know who they or you can ask.
