I ask this because I meet so many people that, fearing a loss, never attempt.

Trying is a sure way to lose sometimes. No matter what you do, you will lose some.

But isn't the lack of trying a complete loss with no chance of winning?

If you are starting a war, I would say never start a war.

If you are talking about sports or other competition, always take part and do the best you can

If you don't try, you don't risk. Without risk, you cannot appreciate what you gain. And is it losing, or learning from experience when you don't win? I never consider it "failure".

Absolutely. If people never tried and failed, much of what is good and wonderful in our lives would never have been discovered!
