I was thinking of buying one and taking lessons. How much do they usually cost? (For a good one)

A mexican made Fender is around $400-$500 for either the Precision (P-bass) or the jazz (J-bass). Either one of these would be a great bass to learn on and you wouldn't "outgrow" it that quickly. I learned on a MIM (mexican) P-bass and I still own it. I have since bought more expensive basses as my skill/style has evolved, but I still play the old P-bass all the time and would have no problems gigging with it.

Go to a musician store (i.e., guitar center) and try a bunch of basses. Find what sounds good to you and is comfortable to play. Most of the sales people can rock out a few good bass lines for you to hear the differences, but you need to try the bass on to see if it's comfortable (basses are all shaped differently and have different style necks).

A lot of it depends on what type of music you are wanting to play. Your music taste might change once you start playing, so that's why I recommend the Fender line because they are very versatile, but most of the top brands have an intermediate line that costs about $500. The sales person at the musician store should be able to point you in the right direction.

Stay away from the "starter" packs - you'll be disappointed IMO. Don't buy one online until you have played that style of bass in a store - it might not be comfortable or have a style of neck that doesn't fit your hand well.

Good luck and stay with it. The world needs more bass players.

The prices vary but if you want something thats sounds decent to learn on you can find some ok stuff for maybe around $300. Ibanez and ESP are some pretty good brands.
