It's called the Matthew Shepard Act and was recently passed by the US House of Representatives.

You can very quickly send a short note to your state's senators by going to this link:

Yes and I am really hoping that it passes because in the early part of March of this year a friend of mine had to go to court because he was the victim of a gay hate crime about 2 years ago, the big fat (yes he is FAT 300 lbs) homophobe bully was charged with a Class A Misdemeanor assault with an attachment of hate crime. With all of the evidence against him and his "I'm being put out" demeanor the homophobe bully got off on a "mistaken identity"defense. I saw how this creep walked and acted before the trial started and I know for a fact in my heart of hearts that he was GUILTY AS SIN. I PRAY that the bill does pass because in the city I live in apparently it's "Justice for all UNLESS you happen to be gay!" and that is BullSh*t!

I e-mailed my senator about it even though I couldn't really get into details with her

Followed it a little since before it went to vote in the House and have already emailed both of my senators. I just hope they can stall until after Jan 20th '08 before it goes to the pres.

Yes, and make sure that you send your clueless faith-based friends (not faith-bashing here, tho I'm sure the AFA will twist my words around to suit their agenda) to Snopes for this article debunking the American Family Association's latest anti-gay screed.

In a nutshell, the hate crimes bill specifically states that it will not prohibit preachers from spewing their anti-gay bile from the pulpit. It is aimed primarily at criminalizing acts of violence against gays and other minorities.
