They may seem to be in need of extra oxygen, but since you have a filter to produce water movement (how most of the dissolved oxygen is added) too much ammonia or nitrites in your tank is much more likely - these interfere with the fish's ability to obtain oxygen from the water, even though there is a sufficient amount. If yo can, you should test your water for these, if not, do a 25% water change when you see this behavior.

Hi, Goldfish-especially the streamlined non-fancy types love moving water, mine often surf the current from my filter outlet & also play in the flow when I pump in new water during a change. Where there is moving water, there is additional oxygen dissolved & that is like a breath of fresh air to them-another good reason to have a filter..

My fish did that briefly when my filter stopped working correctly. It could have been issues with the oxygen, but I believe a spike in ammonia also did it. I fixed it, and all was well -- how big is your tank?

It is the part of the tank where the fresher, oxygenated water is. The water quality in your tank may not be very good.Perhaps lack of water changes or overcrowding.

The water in your tank does not have enough oxygen in it. the The filtered water has more oxygen in it, and they need to get it into their gills.
