My 5 year old son and I went to the Sumner Pool today. As soon as we stepped out of the locker room to wait by the pool for 3 minutes before the 1 o'clock swim begins: the teenage punk lifeguard comes over to bully us. He told us where to stand and wait. He told us very imidatingly about the "pool rules" and threatened to throw us out. This was our first time there. I was there to teach my 5 year old son to swim. We have been to the Enumclaw pool many times and never been treated this way. I want a refund on the punch card I bought. They denied me the refund. The Sumner pool is run down and the teenage lifeguard is on a power trip. If I had known this I would have not wasted my money.

The pool is run by the High school. I called the manager and there was no answer. At the desk there at the pool is run by immature highschool kids.

It is hard not to side with you on your feelings but I must play Devil's Advocate for a minute. I was a waterfront director and a lifeguard supervisor and it seems you've taken the actions of the guards personally. You should give the pool another chance and here's why:

- Maybe the guard you encountered was having a bad day. Maybe the guard didn't feel good or had a headache. He shouldn't take it out on you but you also shouldn't assume everyone will act that way. Give the pool another chance. One lifeguard shouldn't ruin your entire summer.

- Maybe the pool has recently had some run-ins with obnoxious or unruly patrons. If there was a recent situation of which you are unaware the guards may have been given explicit instructions to quantify themselves and present an authority figure. Alot of young lifeguards feel that the public will not repsect their authority and sometimes they do go overboard. Perhaps the manager can speak to the guard and have him tone it down or perhaps you can ask about the situation when they call you back. There may very well be patrons who require the force the guard presented.

- As for the refund, guards are usually not involved with the business side of the pool. The pool manager, with whom you have left a message, will be able to straighten that out for you. If the manager does not contact you then you need to go to the Athletic Director or Director of Facilities at the school in question. As it is summer they may be working summer hours so you should give them some time to return your call. However, do be persistent as sometimes messages are ignored, lost or deleted without reply.

Please don't jump to conclusions based on the actions of one lifeguard. If you go back to the pool and have another bad experience or you have a run-in with the manager or director then by all means create your position. In the meantime, give the pool another shot, make another phone call and handle this in a mature fashion. Your defenses are certainly up, make sure you do not aggrivate the situation by becoming vindictive or hostile. Try to solve the problem in a diplomatic fashion through the proper channels. The kids who guard at the pool are just that - kids. Remember that.

Good luck with your son's swimming!!!

I'm assuming you've already spoken with the manager or owner. If not, try that avenue. Otherwise, if you requested a refund and they didn't give it to you I'd file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. You are entitled to a refund if you're going to be harrassed and intimidated.
