The Core2Duo is an entirely new animal from Intel. Even at 2.0GHz the C2D will outperform the P4 3.2GHz hands down.

For the moment, no video game will really utilize the dual cores of either CPU, but it will be nice to have for future enhancements as the software grows.

That is a good question, the only problem some people might argue AMD other say INTEL CPU, I personally an AMD pro except now I have Intel duo core on my system which is runng great. However I had a heck of bad experience with intel P3 and P4 in the past with Ati video card. I would say for video card aim for Nvidia products and the reason for that they have a unified drivers you cannot go wrong with that and as far as cpu so far intel duo core is ok unless you get a good deall on an AMD duo core or somthing like that. Good Luck

Pentium D840 or D940 (3.2Ghz/ 130watts TDP) are old tech and would be fast in producing HEAT and is just better as a space heater. They are being phased out in favor of the new Pentium E2140 and E2160 that are using C2D technology.

Core2 Duo is new tech/high performance/efficient. It does more per clock cycle and at much lower wattage (ONLY 65 watts).
