Gout is a form of acute arthritis that causes severe pain and swelling in the joints. It most commonly affects the big toe, but may also affect the heel, ankle, hand, wrist, or elbow. Gout usually comes on suddenly, goes away after 5–10 days, and can keep recurring. Gout is different from other forms of arthritis because it occurs when there are high levels of uric acid circulating in the blood, which can cause urate crystals to settle in the tissues of the joints.

A medical lecturer was explaining the difference between arthritis, rheumatism, and gout.

He stated, “Put your finger in a vise. Turn the vise until a pain shoots up your arm. That’s arthritis.”

“Turn the vise tighter. The pain that radiates out is rheumatism.”

“Now turn the vise twelve more times. That’s gout!”

Yes it is - arthritis is any inflammation of the joints.

It can be caused by wear and tear or breakdown of the joint (osteoarthritis) or autoimmune disease (rheumatoid arthritis) or by the uric acid crystals which get into the joints with gout.

I have even heard gout described as a "chemical arthritis".

its when uric acid collects in your joints (fingers, hands toes) and crystalizes. this is brought on by eating certain foods, shellfish beans. It becomes very painful, but i'm not sure that it is a form of arthritis
