Im taking an at home course for AC and they sent me a gauge manifold for r134a, but all I can find with 134a in it is my truck, and It won't hook up to the connecitons. Is there something I can hook up to that doesn't need piercing valves, or can the 134a gauge be used with r22? if not... why?

Carrier A/C home units use Puron which needs course square threads to hook up. Puron is the equivalent to R134a . Automotive has quick disconnect connections like air hoses on a air compressor. Those auto connections have internal threads to discourage armatures from blowing -32 degree refrigerant into there eyes. Your Gage manifold set will work with any system that uses R134 or its derivatives. The quick couplers for automotive just hook to the ends of your hoses. ANY more info just connect to me in chat, fundimentals how A/C removes heat not cool air? and expansion of gasses..

r134a is used in outo air conditioners from 96 and newer if your truck is older it would be r12 r12 and r22 use the same hose connecters for the low side r12 uses a smaller hirh side connecter that requires an adapter that r 22 does not use.the r134 gauges are made so that the old style hoses cannot be adapted to them . this was done to force the industry to accept the new freon.

R-22 is used for commercial and home refrigeration units.
R-12 and R-134a are both automotive refrigerants. They are not of equal density or mass.
They are not interchangeable. That is why the service ports are different.
There are conversion kits available to convert from R-12 to R-134a, and the prices range from about $15.00 (not recommended) to as much as $300.00 for the better quality conversion.
Don't try to mix them.

you can not use a 134 ac with r12 cause they are 2 different systems.all new cars trucks and so forth come with R134. so if you have a r12 system you will have to have it converted to r134. the change that has to be made to r134 is the dryer has to be change and the connection ports and the evp also has to be change
