Stem cell therapy is a new technologie that rely on replacing diseased or dysfunctional cells with healthy, functioning ones. These new technique is being applied experimentally to a wide range of human disorders, including many types of cancer, Parkinson's Disease, ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), spinal cord injuries, and diabetes.
You can get more information in this website: http://www.stemcellresearchfoundation.org/index.htm
President Bush is making a big mistake. He should support such an amazing technologie that could save many lives. Why is he against it? Is all about money or about lives?

Stem cells are clumps of 150 undifferentiated cells in a petri dish, invisible to the naked eye. There is no nervous system. no structure at all.
The problem with this veto is that essentially Bush and his "followers" believe the these cells have a soul. But sometimes these cells split. Does that mean they are two 2 half souls? Then sometimes they fuse back as one. Do we now have 4 souls? Or is 2 souls? Or is down graded to just one again? Essentially, Bush and religous crowd are concerned about the suffering of these cells. They are concered for the cells experience in one form or another. They believe that these cells must recieve the same moral concern as a 9 year old girl with diabetes. These cell, in Bush and friends minds trumpt the well being of actual living humans with diseases.
This issue being that these are not human lives. This is no where near an abortion. This isn't a baby being killed. It's just a collection of about 150 cells that forms stem cell. There is no suffering occuring in this process. Just to give you an example: A fly's brain has 150-200 million cells. Everytime you swat a fly, there is more suffering occuring then when a stem cell is killed for medical therapy.
To all the people who have said the treatment doesn't work - THAT'S BECAUSE THE FUNDING IS BEING REJECTED BY BUSH. You need money and lots of it to learn about these complex treatments and therapies. All leading scientists and doctors have agreed that this is BY FAR the most promising form of medical treatment today, but it is being prevented because of these medieval beleifs held by the president.
Please don't let this be the next Global Warming issue where science loses to radical beliefs. We all should support this. If the religious crowd doesn't want to accpet treatment due to moral conflicts, then don't, but allow the rest of the rational thinking world to pursue this treatment. It could have saved my mothers life.

The denial wasnt against stem cell research it was a denial of federal funding to pay for embryonic stem cell research.
There are several types of stem cells adult, cord and embryonic. This is only regarding federal funding and only regarding embryonic stem cells.
I believe its because its a slippery slope issue where some , and I believe pre Bush is one of them, that is wary that people will be creating human embryos simply to use them to extract stem cells.

I am guessing you are young, so I would suggest you ignore most of the responses on here, as they are biased by the persons personal opinion on stem cell research. I would suggest you go to a science site, so you can find out exactly how it works, and draw your own conclusions about it.
G.B. believes it is a breach in morals. It is up to you to decide if you believe that is true or not.

Democrats want to advance EMBRYONIC stem-cell research. Bush already authorizes funding for ADULT stem cell research which proves significant results.
ADULT stem-cell research is about taking your own cells and planting them in other parts of your body to heal you and repair nerve damage, etc. Federa funding for this began in 2001.
The Democrat's bill demands Bush use federal money to fund EMBRYONIC stem-cell research. This involves taking cells from different bodies and implanting them in your body. Democrats want to harvest these from aborted fetuses. Research is showing this to be a fruitless endeavor anyway, and many who have received embryonic stem cells have developed cancers and tumors which just made their problems worse.
Adult stem cells is about healing you with your own living cells that are part of your immune system anyway. These can adapt because they are part of you anyway. Embryonic stem cells are about taking someone else's dead cells and injecting them in you and expecting your body to accept someone else's cells and make you walk again.
Adult stem-cell research is working. Embryonic has failed to produce anything of a healing nature.

stem cells are special cells in the body that have the ability to form many different tissues...the research is attempting to do things like replace damaged heart tissue, brain tissue, repair nerves etc.....they are collected at a stage befor a mass of cells is considered an embryo....comparing that to aborting a formed fetus with beating heart, developing brain, etc is really a stretch. Scientists hope to be able to use these cells that are routinely destroyed anyway, for some reason bush is against it

Because killing unborn humans to save already born humans defeats the purpose. There is plenty of ways to do the same thing without killing stem cells.
I fully support President Bush in this matter.
And you wanna know whats funny, Hillary came on and said that the rejection was politically spurred. Well it wasn't, but you want to know what is? Her comment that the rejection was politically influenced.
Also, I'm a Jew. Don't just assume that it is only Christians who are against this sort of thing. We don't believe in murder either!!!

Basically put, they are no real reasons to stop this, because apparently most countries excepted the mighty USA can extract stem cells from Adult materials. But for some reason the debate in USA is still surrounding stem cells in embryo (early stage of baby development), which are not necessary anymore...
This debate is just to divide people and attract the vote of the Christian conservative.
Pathetic to say the least...

Stem cell research is the same as abortion. A human embryo is killed and cells removed for experimentation.
President Bush followed his Christian morals and did not allow this to pass.
