While I agree that stem cell research needs funding, and is of the utmost importance, don't despair. Most of the funding is from the state and local level and it will continue. Also, there have been recent breakthroughs that won't require embryonic stem cells.
To answer your question, I believe that President Bush THINKS he is doing the right thing by using his veto power. I don't happen to agree with him, but everyone has their limits as to what is right and wrong.

Stem cell research passed in his first year of office. The government funds like eight lines of stem-cell research and has done so since 2001.
It is embryonic stem cell research, Bush will not fund and vetoes, but I will tell you a secret:
Research is still allowed and may be funded through private money. Don't tell anybody, though.
Another secret: Bush is the first President to authorize government funding for stem-cell research. Again, don't tell anybody. Liberals want to truly believe Clinton was the first, but he wasn't.

This issue is only dividing peoples, and is not really one...
Embryonic stem cells are already something of the past, we can already transformed normal cells into stem cells, without the use of embryonic tissues...
This is all outdated intox to divide American peoples on surperficial things...

He isn't "holding back" anything. He hasn't illegalized stem cell research. He just doesn't think tax dollars should pay for it.

Bush, who is too stupid to have a philosophy of his own, is playing to his Christian/GOP base. And religions are always the last ones to be dragged kicking and screaming into the medical science future.

Certainly. And, considering that the US is a very-high-labor-cost post-industrial economy, holding back inovation is about the worst thing you can possibly do.
