I cannot believe that people are that stupid or mentally ill. Either way, don't you believe that sometimes the death penalty prevents these kinds of crimes. This was a story from Washington state.

I don't think the death penalty would prevent these crimes. People don't stop and think "Well, that one woman went to death row for this, so I should not do it". In a case like this, she probably was unbelievably stressed and desperate for quiet.

I'm not condoning these acts, and I think they should be incarcerated or even possibly on death row, but I just don't think it would prevent it from happening again.

I think what our nation COULD do is educate all moms about stress and self-control, teach them that it's okay for a baby or child to cry (I assume the pacifier was taped to the mouth to try to get the baby to stop spitting it out and stop crying, and if the mother had just dealt with the crying, the baby would be alive today).

I also think that more could be done to create a non-threatening environment to help a mother who recognizes she needs help. Most moms who have worried that they could lose it and do something harmful to their children don't tell anyone because they're afraid they will lose their children forever if those thoughts are known. Instead, I believe the best thing to do would be to either separate the mother and children while she gets counseling and control of herself and has parenting and anger management classes so she can get her children back, or to allow them to stay together through that process with EXTREME supervision. Keep in mind, this should be for parents who recognize they need help and seek to change on their own before they hurt their kids, not for parents who do abuse their children or who are not getting help voluntarily.

Leave her alone with a kitchen knife or a gun, and she will probably do it herself. There is no way that the death penalty will affect negligence. People that make these kind of stupid mistakes do not do so with intent. Murder means there was intent to kill, she did not intend to kill her baby. I rather see the death penalty for people that kill while driving under the influence of alcohol.
For how many times that has happened, you think people would know better by now.
The fast paced society, with multitasking a necessity is partially to blame for a mothers negligence, especially since that's never happened before.
Putting tape on a baby's mouth is never excusable, but I'm sure she wasn't arguing with anyone before hand that it was a good idea. You know, like the drunk that says they can handle driving.

I don't know, first of all I read two news stories (both the linked ones) and neither of them indicated it was DUCT tape. Second, she DID admit to taping the pacifier on the baby AFTER she overheard investigators mentioning SIDS. She's a new mom, probably losing sleep and not thinking all too clearly. Baby's crying, and crying, and the paci keeps falling out, she honestly doesn't think it'll hurt him, and next thing you know, she and baby are FINALLY getting some peaceful sleep... But that sleep goes too long, she goes to check on baby and finds him dead. It's a tragedy. And I agree, she might have tried to get someone to give her a break. But maybe her "Fiance" is a deadbeat asshole who wouldn't help her at all. Maybe she doesn't have local family or friends. It's all a question of what ELSE was going on that night. It's a terrible shame, but I hate when people say nasty things like "I hope she gets assraped in prison for the rest of her miserable life" (Edit: good to see that answer got deleted). No one really knows what led up to that happening. Don't be so quick to judge. And today, try to make an effort to lend a new/young mom a helping hand. How about that? I think I like that idea myself. I know a mom who's on the verge of breakdown right now, and I am absolutely AMAZED at her strenght and resiliency. But I am VERY concerned that she might "snap" from the pressure, with no one helping her at all. I'm going over to talk to her right now.

I believe in the death penalty, but I know a lot about PPD. My aunt has PPD and it's not pretty. I just think she should not have access to any child who is not self-sufficient (under 14 or so) and have house arrest. Her other children should be taken away.

No. Trial by Jury and Innocent until proven guilty are concepts that are the basis of this country. And no the death penalty is irrelevant to the mentally disturbed.

Tape is much more effective on high schoolers, never on a baby. Plain stupid.

Some people ARE that stupid -- isn't it frightening? It makes me think we'd be a whole lot better off if reproduction was restricted. (Except I'm the only one I'd trust to make those decisions, and I already have a job.)
