Why do most people think negative about Detroit, even when they've never stepped foot in the city? Everything associated with Detroit people instantly frown up. Yeah, Detroit has been on the top of a lot of negative list but that's because that's what the media want's to tell you but if you came to the city yourself you would see that Detroiters are good people and we're certainly a safer city than Vegas.

of course we know about the drugs and prostitution and murders and New York, Vegas, Hawaii and all those other tourist places have the same things in their urban areas. So, besides the stuff we know already, something has to be positive...

Now I don't know about it being safer than Vegas but some parts of Detroit do have nice people that look out for you. You're pretty much safe in your neigborhood if you know everybody and have a good rapor.

Oh, Detroit is a great city, if you go there for sport events or to Fox theatre or to the "Downtown Area" because its very open. If you go on the outskirts, east or west side, you will see crime.

I drive from Shelby Township to the New Center Area every day, its a 24 mile drive. as you get farther down (south) you see change. you see burned out housing, you see drug dealers, shoot, on Woodward just north of Grand Blvd i see at least one prostitute every day. whether its a chick or transvestite, thats up to u to find out.

there were 100 murders that were accounted for last year, thats the number accounted for. detroit as a whole is hardly safe, the media doesnt have to tell you.

do me a favor if you want to see detroit, take I 75 south to 7 mile. get off and turn right on the first street, this is Omira, the #1 murder street in detroit. you can buy drugs there no problem.

or take woodward all the way from bloomfield hills and birmingham all south to Comerica Park, you see that detroit is a little worse than you believe it is.

or take any side street west of woodward and south of McNichols. this is Highland Park, where there is no police department. there are, however, many motels to stay at. why would anyone want to stay at a motel that has hourly rates. hmmmmmmmm, drugs and prostitutes i say.

You are preaching to the choir-plus I think stats are biased.
Either way the media has a big part in that-but so those who watch all that biased crap. Large cities with minority leaders tend to be criticized routinely and more often than others-Kwame could consider behaving too!

Besides based on what hear, from the biased folks of course, Oakland CA would be far worse. I dont buy that either though. We all need to learn to take what the media tells us with a grain of salt (common sense).

Yea, you're right. I certainly thought that about Detroit till I went there (my husband is from a suburb of Detroit). This was a long time ago, but I remember it being quite nice.

I got a lot of that from others when I moved to Detroit, and again when I moved to Cleveland. Some of the best times of my life I had in both towns.

what detroit are you people talking about? i live there and its not a cake walk to say the least. it has a couple of nice blocks here and there but that dont change the fact that you could get robbed, jumped, raped and shot and some times in that order in detroit. if you jus stay downtown then maybe youll be ok. its more police there but come to my hood. between dexter and livernois and its everything you'd come to expect

What killed Detroit was the Devil's Night riots. Also the riots after the Pistons Championship and then the ML King riots. Just way too many riots.
