You should take some classes and learn the dances that you're interested in. You need to have some basic knowledge of the steps and music.
How you dance with a person of opposite gender? Hmm, I don't see what's hard about that. You smile as they walk up to you, they usually ask "Would you like to dance?" you say yes, take the dance hold, wait for them to catch the music and follow the moves that they are dancing. If you're a girl traditionally you get to follow. You can approach people too. Invite them for a dance, and follow their moves.

Best way is to take group dance classes. If the classes are followed by a dance party, then it's even better. If you take group dance classes, they usually rotate partners, so you don't need to worry about coming with a partner. Here's a good place to try out (if you live in the SF bay area)

Also, I'm starting a dance class in "Salsa Rueda" In this version of salsa, part of the dance changes partners, so you don't have to look for partners!!! I'm going to have a Free class Wed June 27th, in Los Gatos High School at 8pm, so come try it out if you like
