The running sliding into second was trying to take out the player(it was either DeRosa or Theriot) and made no effort to touch second base.Wasn't he an automatic out because of this? If so,the announcers made no mention of it.

It's not automatic. If the slide was in the "vicinity" of the base the umpire will usually not call the runner out if it was not a force out or if he was not tagged out. That would be a judgment call for the umpire.

There is NO force play slide rule like there is in high school and college. However... there are rules regarding intentional interference....

If, in the judgment of the umpire, a base runner willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielder in the act of fielding a batted ball with the obvious intent to break up a double play, the ball is dead. The umpire shall call the runner out for interference and also call out the batter-runner because of the action of his teammate. In no event may bases be run or runs scored because of such action by a runner.

In no event shall bases be run because of such interference.

If I understand what was going on-

the guy going into second is already forced out. it's within the rules to try to disrupt the relay. like the guy upstairs said, as long as he's in the vicinity of the bag.

you're right though, if the guy turning the DP misses the bag the runner will be called safe even if he appears to slide far from the bag.

AS long as the runner could haved touched the bases as he slid by it by reach out with his arm. If they felt he slid too far out of the base line, then he could have been called out for that.
