Bob Dylan definitely rates high as a songwriter. However, he can't sing. Joan Baez has written some wonderful songs over the years, as did Tim Hardin, and Joan can sing. Oh my, can Joan sing!

Also on my list..
Gordon Lightfoot
Harry Chapin
John Denver
James Taylor
Janis Ian
Carly Simon
Arlo Guthrie
John Prine

My favorite is still the pair John Lennon and Paul McCartney. However, it depends on what time period you are talking about. I also like Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein or even Richard Rodgers and Larry Hart music but someone else sings it. There is no one best singer/songwriter ever. Paul Simon is still great, and I can think of a number of people you may have never heard of - who played in folk clubs or rock clubs, who are great - but not discovered yet. Take your pick.

I am partial to Harry Chapin, Paul Davis, Jim Croce, Michael Johnson, Charlie Daniels, and now Muzik Mafia's John Rich.

Obviously, the greats like Joan Baez, Roger Waters, Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Seger, Leon Russell, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Bill Withers, Billy Preston, and Hank Williams get much respect.

Gordon Lightfoot. he has to be the most underrated and overlooked songwriter in history. and he is a good singer. he should be in every single hall of fame for musicians that exist.
