In less than a heart beat....
But if I don't know, if he is
guilty or not, is it a lie??
I've had more cops lie to me,
than the average joe on the street.
I think, I would take a strangers word,
over a cops, any day.

It really depends on what they did. If they killed someone - I wouldn't lie.

If it was possesion of drugs or petty theft than probably yeah.

Anything worse probably not, i'd be upset that they didn't come to me for help and people learn by their mistakes and going to jail would help them learn. It doesn't mean I still wouldn't be their friend.

Stealing a car, I probably wouldn't lie to cops about that because it's a stupid thing for them to do in the first place. Where as stealing money or something else might show they are desperate. All my friends have cars anyways.

If he was innocent he wouldn't need you to lie.
And to those that mentioned yes they would, "who cares about guilt" Depending on the severity of the crime you could be tried as an accomplice or in the very least bit aiding and abetting. Aiding and Abetting is reserved for those people that did not help in the crime itself but he/she had knowledge of the crime either before or after the fact. Depending on the person's involvement it can be raised to Conspiracy. Basically without the legal mumbo-jumbo, if you have knowledge of someone committing a crime and don't report you could be held accountable.

Lastly, to the question's originator. You on the other hand have no knowledge, but before you get happy realize that it's called perjury. Perjury is the act of lying or making verifiably false statements on a material matter under oath or affirmation in a court of law or in any of various sworn statements in writing. "Perjury is considered a serious offense as it can be used to usurp the power of the courts, resulting in miscarriages of justice. In the United States, for example, the general perjury statute under Federal law provides for a prison sentence of up to five years, and is found at 18 U.S.C. § 1621. See also 28 U.S.C. § 1746."

I would...BUT and this is a big BUT, it all depends on what they did. Depending on that I may not lie.

What you need to do is to search yourself for this answer. If you've asked this person if they did this or not and they said no but your not sure if there telling you the truth, then ask yourself, do you really want this person who your having a hard time believing to be called your friend.

My thoughts are if someone was truly a "real true blue kinda friend" would I have a hard time trusting them. And if I did then I guess they really aren't a "friend", not the kind of friend I would want to have....

The truth will set you free! So I don't think it's necessary to lie. If he's innocent time will tell if he's guilty then he should and probably will go to jail.

no, and i would just tell the police department that i'm not sure if they were guilty or not. i mean, of course i would get the urget to lie because that person IS my BEST FRIEND, but i would end up just telling them that i was unsure.

Always tell the truth. You can never go wrong that way. Sounds like a simple answer, but "been there, done that". Learn from my experierences and tell truth

If you aren't sure of their guilt or innocence, then why lie about it and possibly make it worse.

If the lie was discovered, that would make your friend look even more suspicious.
