Am idiot caveman who saw lighting hit a tree during a thunderstorm. Then when he was playing with some rocks had descovered that two certain kinds of rocks, when struck against one another, throw out spark.
While playing with the rocks some of the sparks shot and hit dry bursh, thus fire.

Some caveman who experienced a big storm; lightening hit the ground and caught (lets say) a tree on fire.
He probably was scared, but thought it was interesting, new, and definitely different. So he went to touch it. Since they used their senses much more than we do.
