Why are we told to duck and cover when the plane's about to crash?

Shouldn't everyone be having one last round of drinks, including the children, before the final countdown?

No time for last drinks. Duck and cover in hopes that the flying metal, glass and personal items don't take your head off, and stay low in hopes the seats survive with you behind them.
