I'm needing to stay in contact with distant friends. A few have yahoo and some have MSN but which is better?

Get Yahoo because MSN is owned by microsoft and we all know how microsoft lacks security.

Talk to Yahoo and MSN IM users within iChat
this will allow u to talk to both yahoo and msn users at the same time

Just get Trillian and you can run both messengers from one program. That way you can talk to your MSN friends, and your Yahoo friends at the same time from one program.
