I do not know who to trust. i am putting at least 2-3 quarts of oil in after driving 30 or so miles. anyone up for this question? this car has been known to have a defect with oil leaks.

Ford Girl has this one nailed. The failure in the gasket is the seal located on the back side of the engine under the enhaust manifold. There is an oil passage there that feeds pressurized oil from the pump to the cam and rocker arms in the head. This seal is built in to the head gasket. It does not cause a coolant leak, or mixing of oil with the coolant, as the port is about 1/2 inch from the edge of the block. It presents as an external leak.

The price you were quoted is a good price for the repair. Be sure that they are using the multi layer metal head gasket instead of a composite gasket, like Ford Girl says. This is the single most common failure in that car, and the new design gasket is a permanent fix. There is no sense getting rid of the car over this. Keep in mind that the head bolts are torque to yield, and should be replaced, and that the torque specs for the multi layer gasket are tigher than for the composite gasket.

The real shame is that 4 people spouted off wrong information concerning your question. Much to my delight, a girl got it right. People really shouldn't give advise when they don't know what they are talking about.

Head gasket leaks are EXTREMELY common on 1995 to 1999 Chrysler Neon/Stratus/Breeze models equipped with the 2.0L/2.4L 4 cylinder engines. The updated gasket from Chrysler is a steel shim type gasket which replaces the original composite type gasket. They ALL leak from the rear of the engine, down to the bottom of the transmssion bellhousing area, making them easily mistaken for a rear main seal oil leak, to those who are unfamiliar with this VERY common problem on those cars. $800 sounds very reasonable for the repair, given how tight and difficult cylinder head removal is, on this particular car. Hope this helps.

Check your water if no oil in there, and no blue smoke coming out the exhaust then most likely is not a head gasket. When parked is there an oil stain underneath? Parked and running do you get an oil stain underneath? If so see where the stain lines up. Is your oil pan plug not tight? Did someone error in putting on your oil filter? Do you just need to tighten the valve cover gaskets? I have seen all these simple things cause allot of oil to be lost especially the filter. Check these simple things before spending a fortune on head gaskets.

If you needed a head gasket you'd be always refillng the coolant and might see white smoke out the pipe. Those engines are....not the greatest. I bet most of your oil is being burned due to poor oil control and sent out the exhaust. If you run your finger inside the pipe and its oily-there you go.
If it's at all possible buy another make of car. Don't put $900 into a car worth no more than double that.

GET IT REPAIRED TODAY!!!

If you don't, and it is the head gasket, you could get water mixed with your oil and sieze your engine into one solid chunk of metal. Once you're there, it's about time to buy a new vehicle.

2-3 quarts of oil is crazy!
