I like Active Virus Shield. A lot. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
Full test chart is here:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb ram)
Active Virus Shield detects and removes spyware, also.
And it updates up to 15 times a DAY with new virus definitions, 7 days a week!
Good stuff, free for everyone from:

Here is an excellent free antivirus program from AOL, Active Virus Shield powered by Kaspersky Lab of Russia. Rated # 1 in the world for virus detection. You will get auto updates every hour on the hour, plus an excellent background scanner that really works great. AOL, will only ask you for your email so they can send you a free key good for one year. After one year just request a new key.

avg free :

That or avast home edition ( which is free for home users ) you just have to register avast once on there website every year or there abouts :
http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
Once registered though it allows you to do on boot scans and is pretty good.
If you want a paid one, then I recommend nod32
http://www.eset.com/
There are other free anti virus apps out there such as avir as far as Im aware :
http://www.free-av.com/
As per above, only use one anti virus and the same goes for a firewall unless you have a hardware firewall.
Anti spyware I suggest you use more then one for anti spyware.
If you need more help, just post back.
Thanks

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firefox for free, Just have a try:

Avast Home Antivirus (Vista Compatible)

( Note: Only use one anti-virus product. Running more than one can cause conflicts thus rendering each ineffective.
