it is a very big deal.
It means that Elizabeth and Edward Connor left a hefty amount of money in an account, from which the salary and all kinds of expenses are paid to the professor.

***edit*** : Its seems to me to be a decent merit of achievement and recognition in teaching abilities from what I gathered from Google.
