Curses and psychic attacks are very often in the imagination of the victem -- a ind of pschic self-sabotage brought on by guilt, paranoia, or fear. It is theoretically possible, of course, but actual curses are rare. For one thing, not too many people know how to do them these days. But, real or imagined, the cure is pretty much the same.
Firstly, curses tend to only work if you allow them to. Faith in a personal deity, complete and utter disbelief in the curse, or a good hearty belly laugh tend to do the trick. If that doesn't work for you, there are a few things that can.
1) Smudging with Sage. This is a Native American ritual of purification and blessing. Simply put, you smolder some dried sage in a bowl, censer, or sea shell, offer it to Mother Earth and Father Sky, the Ancestors, and the Four Quarters (or the divinities of your personal pantheon) and fumagate your house and yourself with the smoke. This has the effect of driving away "negative" energies (by "negative" I do not mean in imply that I embrace Dualism in any way, simply "negative" means inefficient or not functioning in this particular case.)
2) Place a black candle in on a mirror, or with a mirror behind it, and burn it down to the socket. This reflects the "curse" back on its sender. If you are Wiccan, you can use three mirrors, thus sending the curse back threefold.
3) make a "witch bottle" Take a jar, put some nails in it, and/or a mirror (same reason as #2) Then, put something of you into the jar -- hair, nail clippings, pee -- urine is the most popular method because the act of ritually "peeing out the curse" is very cathartic. Burry this in the ground a good ways away from your home. The idea here is that the curse goes to the jar instead of to you, and then either to ground or back to the attacker.
Hope this helps. And remember, the less you worry about this sort of thing, the less it can effect you.

In ancient Roman times--and I suppose this also can be found in Italian (and possibly Greek) folk magic--lemons were pierced with nails as a form of "sympathetic magic" to weaken another person. It was kind of like an evil-eye curse where the idea was to "dry up" the other person. That is, make him weak or impotent.
It's probably best to dismiss the idea that someone can curse you and to return the negativity you perceive from another person with a compassionate or neutral attitude and with distance. Raise the energy, don't play into it.

I can look intuitively at history and see if there's anything that answers your question; I assume you don't mean a fingernail or you would have said so--nails were used to end things people thought were curses to try to send the energetic message to those who thought using curses was a good idea. Every time a 'curse bundle' was encountered, a nail would be driven through it, for example something that looked like a sachet but had intentions of curses in it; a nail would be driven through it. Prior to ending the cursing desire in humanity, to end a nail curse people would create the same cursing 'device' and then let lightning run through it

You can counter it by not believing in it and placing your belief in Jesus.
