You have to be aware of open casting calls, so you need to read either the local acting trades or something like Variety

There are hundreds of extras agencies- in the Uk anyway- just look them up on google!
Make sure you are equity registered though, which is about £300 a year for membership- but means you are allowed to be recorded and paid. I'd also join the actors guild too otherwise you won't have any support.
Being an extra is hard work by the way! It's a fulltime job, and you have to be where they tell you when they tell you- and do whaty they tell you. One day you might be wearing a frilly dress in a period drama for the BBC, and then the next day off to scotland in the mountains wearing just a bikini! You need transport because they don't supply it, and enough money to get to these places because that'll come out of your wages.
Finally, some shows expect you to supply some bits of the costume.
Good luck

BE VERY CAREFUL! There are a lot of people who will take your money and you will have nothing to show for it.
Not knowing where you live and if you are an adult, let me tell you there is actually a movie casting background actors in Bridgeport, CT this weekend on Saturday morning at the Downtown Cabaret Theater. It's an Oprah Winfrey Movie of the Week and you need to be there early because there is certain to be a long line of would-be performers. The shooting will begin in July and the name of the movie is "FOR ONE MORE DAY". If you live in the New York City area, go to Central Casting on Sixth Avenue and register on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons. That's if you're non-union. If you live in the Philadelphia area, go online to the Philadelphia Film Office webpage. They list all sorts of information for beginners.
I recommend MikeLemon Casting office. His is a reputable business and he holds open auditions every month. If you are in southern california, go to Central Casting in Los Angeles. Any other major city, check with your own state for their office of film making. Hope this helps. See you in the movies.

First. Do you live in a city where movies are filmed?
Second, Get the name of the Casting Director casting Extras and mail him or her your headshot/résumé.
Third, wait for the Assistant to the Casting Director to call you and ask if you are available to work as an Extra.
Fourth, have fun on the shoot.

Read the BACKSTAGE Newspaper, look for movies in your area and simply answer the ad. However, why be just an extra when you may have the talent to go further?

Look for ads in your area at local colleges, in newspapers, and online. Most movies, etc, that are looking for extras will post ads and general cattle calls. Get a resume and headshot ready for such instances, they might like you enough to use you for more than as a crowd member!
