My friend had a baby 3 days ago. She weighed 5.13 at birth. She has been breastfeeding a lot but lost 10 oz at her weigh-in last night. She is worried about nipple confusion so is hesitant using formula. They are using the tube on the breast to suppliment. Does anyone think there could be a problem?
She was full term. And got a 9 on the birth test. They are keeping them at the hospital another day. What are the dr's looking for so that she can go home? Is this cause for alarm?

It is VERY unusual for newborns to gain wait in the first week. They almost always loose it for the first few days. I would anticipate this weight loss will reverse in about a week from today.

I just gave birth a week and a half ago. Granted, my baby was a preemie, but the nurses have told me it is common for babies, early or full term, to lose at around 15% of their weight at birth. My baby lost 6 oz and was only 2 1/2 pounds at birth. I do know that while breast is best for nutrients and the immune system, my baby is on breast milk with a formula supplement because the formula tends to have more calories and the doctor said that supplementing with it will help to fatten her up quicker. I don't really think your friend has any cause for concern. I'm sure the doctors are just being cautious. I wouldn't worry about nipple confusion. There are many women who do both - bottle and breast, and their babies take to both with no problem.

It's normal for a newborn to lose some weight right after birth. If she's still at the hospital then the drs would be aware if there was a problem. I'm sure everything is okay.

I think all babies loose a bit of weight after the birth.

Although 10 oz seems a bit too much. They are wanting to make sure that mom is producing enough milk to sustain the baby...

If the baby can't maintain it's weight just on mom's milk alone she may have to cave and allow the baby to have formula

No. No need to worry. My daughter had something similar happen & everything went just fine. The baby loosing weight after birth is normal & breastfeeding problems are normal. All will work out if she is just patient & gives it some time.

All babies lose weight at first, but I know that doctors worry a bit if they lose more than 10% of their body weight, which it sounds like she just barely did. They're probably just making sure she's feeding well before they send her home. It's much easier to take care of feeding problems in the hospital than at home. She probably won't gain any weight yet - breastfed babies tend to gain it back slower - but they may be watching to make sure she doesn't continue to lose.

Babies lose some weight after birth, but anything more than nine or ten percent is cause for some concern. My baby lost nine percent of her baby weight after birth. My milk took nine days to come in. Your friend might want to continue trying to breastfeed, but give her baby a couple of bottles. I tried to using the tube supplemental feeder on my daughter, but she never got the hang of it.

all babies lose weight before their first check-up. my little guy was nearly 9 pounds at birth, born on a monday and when i brought him in for a check-up on that friday he weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces. as long as the baby is wetting enough diapers and pooping somewhat regularly, she shounldn't be concerned. i was terrified when i breastfed of my baby not getting enough, but he thrived just fine. just let her know that it is okay to supplement with formula if it will ease her mind; we did andhe still took to the breast. also, don't be afraid to call the doc-its their job to answer all your questions, no matter ho silly they may sound to you. good luck and congrats to your buddy!
