The brightest actual star in the night sky is Sirius, but it is below the horizon at sunset these days. The bright object in the sky that you saw was Venus, which is the brightest natural object in the sky after the sun and the moon. Jupiter is next brightest after Venus. Both are brighter than Sirius.

Close to the Moon is most likely the planet Venus.
The brightest star is Sirius.

If you mean the bright point in the west for a few hours after sunset, that's the planet Venus. And its been in that general area of the sky and that bright (and even brighter) since January.
If you mean in the southern sky in the evening, its Saturn (to the southwest) or Jupiter (to the southeast).
