This is sleep paralysis, not a dream. When in the hypnagogic state, you are paralyzed. This is something the body does before falling asleep to keep the body from acting out our dreams. Here is a link in case you want to read up on it:

Hope that helps!

Aha! You are a victim of classic sleep paralysis my friend! This is when you're stuck in the REM stage of sleep. I'm sure you've heard of it somewhere--Rapid Eye Movement. Basically, in this stage, your muscles actually shut down (That's how you are able to relax!) and you can actually feel fully aware of your surroundings--some people in this stage don't actually think they're asleep. You may have some dreams in this stage too. The problem is, if you aren't going on to deeper levels of sleep after this, then you probably aren't getting all the levels of sleep you need.
This is often the stage where people wake up and think they hear things in the distance (ghosts) and freak out because they can't move even though they're awake. Don't worry though, you aren't in a parallel dimension or anything.

I remember learning about this in my AP Psychology class... As far as I know, it actually isn't a dream; it's called sleep paralysis. Basically, your brain and your senses are awake, but your muscles aren't.

The cause is that the pons, a structure in your brain stem, is still covering your spinal cord which then prevents motor activation from occuring. Normally, the pons prevents you from physically reacting to dreams so you do not hurt yourself, but some messages do get through such as sleep walking or sleep talking.

In your case, you have woken up but your ponz is still preventing your brain from telling your muscles to move. However, you can still process all of the sensory input (like sound) and you are cognizant (like understanding/remembering language or even recognizing voices).

Here is a Wikipedia entry about it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis). If it is a recurrent problem, I suggest talking to your doctor more thoroughly. Best of luck!

Wow, the same thing used to happen to me. I was aware of what was going on, I was awake. I felt as if my hands then my legs were being held down. I couldn't scream as much as I tried. It took a while until I was able to snap out of it. There have been times I do dream but can't wake up. It's weird.

That would depend on whether or not you were really dreaming. There is an altered state of consciousness where you can see and hear what's going on around you, but your motive self is in an alternate state of consciousness. You could find yourself "seeing, feeling and hearing" someplace else while you're still moving around in this reality, or it could be the opposite, where you see this reality, but feel yourself moving around in another reality/consciousness. This is called temporal bi-location. So, if you're "sure" you're dreaming, it's probably your mind working through feelings of inadequacy to control your environment. However, if you're actually seeing and hearing things that are going on around you, but you can't move or feel yourself moving when you're not, it could be temporal bi-location.

hi Lisa! I first experienced my sleep paralysis whilst i advance into 11. It advance into scarey as heck. I too tried to wish, calling out God's call even, in spite of the undeniable fact that it got here out sounding like i advance into possessed! I did in spite of the undeniable fact that do learn into this phenomenon when I have been given older and located my answer. Scientifically, that is brought about via the hormones that the physique produces to enduce paralysis once you're dreaming so which you do no longer flail approximately or arise and do risky issues mutually as no longer extremely unsleeping. that's evidenced in those with the sleep challenge frequently customary as sleep walking. they do no longer produce sufficient or any of this hormone, and so walk approximately or carry out all varieties of strange strikes mutually as nevertheless in a dreaming state. under is a hyperlink that discusses the type you will possibly be waiting to control this adventure via turning it right into a lucid dream, which in case you at the instant are not familiar, ability being waiting to advance into conscious or unsleeping in case you're nevertheless dreaming and then controlling the dream, purposely and consciously. Being a non secular person, I even have my own theory as to why the sleep paralysis seems to continually address a feeling of evil mutually as being experienced. If one does have self assurance in wicked spirit forces, and one has found out of their habit, then it would not be a a techniques stretch to comprehend that for people who do have self assurance in wicked spirits, those savour scaring us and making us unhappy. So individually, I do have self assurance the physique is paralyzed via way of hormonal responses, yet that, as i think of their life, that if there are wicked spirits forces around, they are able to make the main of the time once you're maximum vulnerable and no longer able to regulate your physique to frighten you. in simple terms my address it.
